Shoulder Research

Our shoulder research programme begun in 2017. The aim of our research is to improve outcomes, reduce the risk of re-injury and aid return to play decision making for patients who have undergone shoulder surgery.

We are currently investigating a series of tests, which have been created in collaboration with international experts, to see if they can provide reference data and cut off values for at risk athletes who have undergone shoulder surgery, prior to their return to sport. The tests are performed in our biomechanics laboratory, which hosts the most innovative technology in Europe. The series of tests include gold standard isokinetic strength testing, as well as novel biomechanical upper limb functional tests performed on dual force plates and 3D biomechanics lab testing to assess patients sense of joint position in space. Patients are tested at 14 weeks, 6 months and 12 months post-surgery and we will then continue to track their success and recovery over a 2 year period.
